Some 50 years ago, Porsche introduced a new vehicle to fill the bottom end of their range. To do so, they collaborated with parent VW to contain costs and to appeal to another audience. That vehicle was the 914, introduced as a Porsche in North America, but as a VW/Porsche elsewhere. It was a brilliant no-frills lightweight perfectly balanced mid-engine sports car. The Classic Velocity garage was also smitten with this formula more than once. Now, rumor has it that Porsche is once again looking to introduce a basic machine at the bottom of the price range. Actually, it is more than just rumor, as design boss Michael Mauer has hinted that a 914 successor may already be in the design studio. Porsche Club America has weighed in on the case. We shall see….But it may be quite a bit different than the old 914
